Blephex™ Treatment
Over 30% of all patients suffer from some type of blepharitis symptoms – these are redness, dry eye, itching, feeling like something is in the eye, and buildup of debris on the lashes.
BlephEx™ is a new, in-office procedure that removes scurf, debris, biofilm and bacterial exotoxins, the main causes of inflammatory lid disease, thereby improving the health of the eyelid.
Treatment with BlephEx™ can improve the chronic and irritating symptoms associated with blepharitis. The BlephEx™ treatment is well tolerated and only takes a few minutes to perform.
What is Blepharitis?
Blepharitis is a chronic, inflammatory disease of the eyelids related to normal bacteria living along the lid and the base of the eyelashes. Anyone can get blepharitis at any age, but it becomes more common with age, since as we get older, we make fewer natural antibodies in our tears.
An overgrowth of bacteria produces a biofilm that traps scurf and debris along the eyelashes leading to build up of bacterial exotoxins along the lid margin. These exotoxins penetrate the eyelid tissue causing low-grade inflammation, which adversely affects the tear glands, turning down tear production. Fewer tears containing fewer antibodies allow even more bacteria accumulate and a vicious cycle is established, leading to chronic irritation and dry eye. Blepharitis is often accompanied by lower tear volume, that then leads to dry eye. Plugging of the oil glands that are within the eyelids may also contribute to eye irritation.
BlephEx™ works by cleaning off the excess bacteria, oils, and debris to break the inflammatory cycle.
